Referrer checker

Is this visit from an AI assistant?

Paste a referrer, a landing URL or both. The check runs in your browser against the open referrer list; nothing is sent.

Leave empty if the visit had none.

What the checker does

It compares the hostname of a referrer, and the utm_source of a landing URL, with the referrer list. The result names the assistant if there is a match, shows the evidence behind that row, and lists how GA4, Plausible, Matomo and PostHog describe the assistant.

It handles the awkward cases: an empty referrer (this is how Direct looks), a tag with no referrer, an origin without a path, input without a scheme, an app identifier and a Google referrer, which cannot be told apart from ordinary search.

How to get the two values

  1. Open the page of your own site that an assistant linked to. In the browser's developer tools console, type document.referrer and copy the result. Empty means no referrer was passed.
  2. Copy the full address from the address bar. The query string is where utm_source lives.
  3. Paste both values above. Your analytics tool shows the same two things as source, medium and landing page.

What it cannot tell you

  • How your own analytics property classified the visit. "Named" only means the tool's documentation mentions the assistant.
  • Whether a hostname that is not on the list belongs to an assistant. The list grows with evidence; it has a check date for a reason.
  • Where a Direct visit came from. Without a referrer and a tag there is nothing to read. See why AI clicks end up as Direct.

Follow-up questions

A visit shows google.com. Was it AI?

It cannot be told. AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks are counted as google / organic, the same as classic results. See the Google row of the list.

What does tag only mean?

The landing URL has a utm_source that names an assistant, but no referrer arrived. Tools that classify by referrer alone leave such a visit in Direct; tools that read utm_source count it. The UTM explainer has the background.

Can I remove the tag from the link?

Yes, with the UTM cleaner.
