Track AI assistant traffic in Plausible
Plausible has a native AI Assistants channel. Its page names ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot "and other known assistants", says a visit is attributed only when a referrer or a UTM tag is present, and says known AI crawlers are filtered out. The page gives no start date, so check your own history before you compare periods.

Only hostnames with a test or a vendor source.

For hand-made tags such as utm_source=chatgpt.

We found no documented regex operator for Source in Plausible's filter documentation, so add one filter per value.

Syntax partly documented9 values
- Plausible has a native channel called AI Assistants. Use it first and treat this list as a cross-check or for hostnames it may not group.
- Plausible attributes a visit to an assistant only when a referrer or a UTM tag is present.
- The list holds exact hostnames. A www. variant (for example www.chatgpt.com) is recognised by the referrer checker but is not in this pattern; add it if your reports show it.
Built from the referrer list (checked ). Settings are not saved; the page works offline once loaded.

Where our list goes beyond the page
Our referrer list holds assistants that Plausible's page does not name: Meta AI, Le Chat, Grok, DeepSeek, You.com and iAsk. "Other known assistants" may cover some of them. We have not tested this, so open the Sources report, look for these hostnames, and see whether they sit under the AI Assistants channel.
A filter recipe
Plausible's filter documentation does not describe a regex operator for the Source dimension that we could confirm, so a single pattern is not an option here; the generator therefore prints one value per line and you filter with "contains" or "is".
- Open the dashboard for your site and use the native AI Assistants channel first.
- To cross-check, add a Source filter with the operator contains and one hostname from the generator.
- Repeat per hostname, or group them in your own notes: each filter shows one hostname's visits.
- Add the totals and compare with the channel. A difference points at a hostname the channel does not group, or at tags without a referrer.
Limits to keep in mind
- No referrer and no tag means no attribution. See why AI clicks end up as Direct.
- Plausible reads the referrer of the visit, like any tool. If an assistant strips it, as reported for ChatGPT in October 2026, the visit is not an AI Assistants visit. See the incident page.
- We could not find a statement on whether the channel applies to historic data.
Follow-up questions
Does Plausible count AI crawlers as visitors?
Its page says known AI crawlers are filtered out. Which crawlers are known is not listed there. Crawler requests are a different thing from people clicking an assistant's link.
Can I filter with a regex in Plausible?
The filter documentation we read lists is, is not, contains and does not contain, and does not mention regex. Treat a regex as unavailable until the documentation says otherwise.
